The redevelopment of the Angel Central Shopping Centre in Islington was delivered by Red Construction Group and designed by Haskoll with extensive glazing works carried out by Topglass. Due to the bespoke and specialist nature of the various glazing elements required for the contract, Topglass was involved at an early design stage working with the architects, contractor and engineers AECOM to help shape the specification. This early engagement and team effort ensured high performance requirements were met.
The resulting glass installations have an impactful part to play within the overall shopping development and succeed in delivering a favourable visual aspect with a strong focus on functionality; meeting requirements for crowd loads, fire resistance, smoke control and energy efficiency.
An ellipsis shaped glass kiosk is set at the centre of the project, complete with minimal framework and automated curved glass doors. Positioned below the focal point winged sculpture, the kiosk’s technically intricate but minimal aesthetic perfectly complements this central showpiece.
On the upper level a new pedestrian link bridge has been created making the area more easily accessible and reducing congestion with a more free-flowing design. Topglass installed glass balustrading to the existing and new pedestrian walkways, maintaining an open aspect with little obstruction to view.
Curtain walling, which features both straight and curved glass units, spans two floors for the Uniqlo store. The store also boasts oversized feature bay windows, a pairing which allows for favourable levels of natural light filtration within.
Illuminated coloured glass screens were chosen to highlight the escalator area in a burnt orange tone which is in keeping with other surrounding building materials.
The project was delivered on time and within budget and has achieved BREEAM Excellent certification.
